Personality:

Before his death Kyrian was known for his stubbornness and impulsivity. If he made up his mind about something, nobody was going to change it. Given he was also impulsive and tended to leap before he looked, the combination got him into a lot of trouble. While Kyrian is much less impulsive at his current age than he was at 24, his stubbornness still remains. The few friends he has typically don’t succeed in talking sense into him.

When he was alive Kyrian had an intense love of life and excitement. He took pleasure in every moment and sought out things that tested the boundaries and would be fun. His smile was infectious and his optimism could make anyone enjoy their time around him. Since his death that’s all changed. Kyrian has learned how even the smallest choices can alter a life, for good or for bad. Some of the lessons his father tried to teach him as a young man, especially that nobody would ever truly love Kyrian because of his wealth and title, have finally sunk in. His personality is much more guarded. Very few people ever see what he’s truly thinking or feeling. He locks up emotion firmly behind a mask. Part of his guarded personality comes from his need for secrecy as well. Due to the oath he took as a Dark Hunter, he can’t reveal very much about himself. Even without the oath, however, Kyrian is hesitant to talk about his past because of the pain it brings him.

Both before his death and after, Kyrian is exceptionally loyal. Despite the fact that sleeping with women other than one’s wife was completely accepted (even expected) in his time, Kyrian was nothing but dedicated to Theone. He shows the same dedication with the few friends that have breached his defenses. Once someone finds a way into his heart, he protects them with everything he has. That takes a lot of effort however. Kyrian has learned not to give his trust away easily. Even once he does offer a small amount of trust to someone, there’s always a part of his mind that’s waiting for that betrayal. Keeping people at arm’s length isn’t far enough. Kyrian has built up a wall around himself that he won’t let anyone breach. He even purposefully uses his title of “Hunter” as a name to prevent any connection with people. Having someone get close to him and then watching them get hurt or killed is terrifying for him. He will put himself directly in harm’s way to prevent that from happening.

While he’s no longer a risk taker when it comes to people, he still loves taking risks while out hunting Daimons. There’s a thrill to the hunt that he can’t get enough of, even 2,000 years later. He absolutely adores taunting and teasing his adversaries, both to give him an advantage in the fight and because it’s fun. Even outside of battle he uses sarcasm and dry humor to answer questions, especially those that are slightly annoying.

While outwardly he appears to not care about anyone so he won’t get too close, Kyrian is actually incredibly caring and kind. If he sees someone in need of help, he provides it. This has gotten him into trouble before when Daimons realized they could use humans to trick him. A few of those traps have nearly killed him, but he still can’t help himself from going to a human’s aid. There have even been times when a human has tried to kill him, but he couldn’t cause that person harm even then. Not only has he physically rescued people, he acts as a guide to those who appear to be starting to take the wrong path. Kyrian shares his own experiences and life lessons with Nick for the sole purpose of helping the teen, even when remembering his past is beyond painful.

Kyrian’s past, especially his death, play a huge part in his behavior and personality. He carries incredible guilt over his decisions related to Theone. The guilt is locked up Inside of him and he won’t put it down, even if some of it is misplaced. It was his decision, his bad choice, and therefore everything that happened was his fault. His past can be an incredible weakness for him. If any part of his torture and crucifixion are replayed and re-experienced, especially the sensation of having his arms pulled outward and tied down, is enough for Kyrian to completely lose it. All sense of rational thought is gone, and he’ll fight desperately to get free. The memories of Theone’s betrayal and his death haven’t faded in the least.

Background:

Born the sole heir to the throne of Thrace in ancient Greece, Kyrian grew up with a loving father, mother, and three sisters (Diana, Phaedra, and Althea). At the age of fourteen he decided to join the Greek army despite his father’s disapproval. He was placed into the care of Julian of Macedon. Thinking it would be all glory and fun, Kyrian quickly learned that battle wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Regardless, he progressed through the military and became known as one of the best commanders. Together, he and Julian brought defeat after defeat to the Roman army.

While in the army Kyrian met Theone and fell in love with her. His friends and family all disapproved. Not only was Theone a prostitute, they believed she was only after Kyrian’s money. In an attempt to prevent their marriage, Kyrian’s father threatened to disinherit him. Despite his father’s threats and warnings, Kyrian still loved Theone and believed she loved him as well. He chose to marry her regardless of their opinions.

Unfortunately, Kyrian’s family was right. Theone used Kyrian and plotted with the Roman commander for her own gain. When Kyrian returned home after his greatest win in battle, she drugged him and turned him over to his greatest enemy in the Roman army. Valerius tortured Kyrian for four weeks. Kyrian’s family offered anything to him to release Kyrian, but to no avail. In the end, Valerius crucified him. Because of Theone’s betrayal, at his death Kyrian’s soul cried out for vengeance. The cry was heard by Artemis, and he was offered the chance at vengeance against Theone (which he couldn’t take in the end because he still loved her) and a position as a Dark Hunter in exchange for his soul.

As an immortal dark hunter, Kyrian was able to see the impact of his death on his family. Distraught over his death, his father committed suicide and his youngest sister shaved her head in grief. His death also stripped Greece of its greatest general, so Rome conquered Kyrian’s entire homeland.

Throughout the years Kyrian traveled around, hunting Daimons to protect innocent humans. Most of that time he spent alone, though he did have some regular contact with Acheron. For the last few hundred years, Kyrian has been stationed in New Orleans.

He met Nick Gautier one evening while he was out hunting. The boy had saved a pair of tourists from a mugging that his friends had tried to commit, and as a punishment, his friends nearly killed him. Kyrian stepped in and saved Nick’s life. Seeing a lot of himself in Nick and wanting to help keep him on the right path, Kyrian decided to make Nick his Squire. It was definitely a good decision even though he wants to wring Nick’s neck for being such a sarcastic pain more often than not.

Abilities:

Kyrian has psychic abilities including mind reading and suggestion. Should he choose to, he can read the thoughts of those nearby. If someone has a weaker will, he can also mentally compel them to believe or do something. For example, he’s convinced someone that they never saw him, everything was alright, and they should just go on their way. He can also see souls, identifying characteristics about a person through their soul.

As a dark hunter, Kyrian has heightened senses similar to those of animals. He can hear the tiniest noises, including blood flowing through the body, and identify people by smell. His eye sight is also heightened to the point that normal amounts of light are painful to him. Seeing in the dark is no big deal, but the light pretty much blinds him. Kyrian’s physical abilities are incredibly heightened also. Jumping down from the roof of a two story building is no big deal and he’s jumped and flipped halfway up a set of stairs before, going over the banister in the process. He’s stronger and faster than normal humans as well. Because the sun can kill him, Kyrian can intrinsically sense when sunrise and sunset are coming each day.

Kyrian can pretty much heal any wound in a day, no matter how severe it is. In canon he’s recovered from two shattered kneecaps over the course of the day, though he was still slightly weak afterward. A killing blow is still a killing blow, but if an injury is treated quickly enough he can survive what would kill almost anyone else.

Even before his death Kyrian was one of the best swordsmen in all of the Mediterranean. Since then, he’s had over 2,000 years more to practice. He’s deadly with a sword no matter how many opponents he’s facing. His extra years of life have allowed him to become more than proficient with a variety of other weapons as well, including more modern guns.

Network/Actionspam Sample:

I am in need of a carpenter of some sort. Or perhaps a MacGyver. That would do as well. I need to do some updating to the place where I am living. Clearly it hasn’t been inhabited in a while.

[There’s a small note of disgust in his voice since Kyrian is used to living in relative luxury.]

Would anyone be capable of making some shutters? Solid, well-sealed ones that won’t let in any light. Sleeping during the day is one of the downsides of working third shift, and I’d like my place to be dark during the day.

[There’s a note of amusement in his voice. Funny how the truth can be twisted slightly without actually being a lie. And without revealing the actual truth.]

I could also use a better fitting door. One that doesn’t allow any gaps between it and the frame. The last thing I would want is to share my home with cockroaches or some such that slipped through the door. I would highly appreciate anyone’s assistance with this, and I’m sure I could come up with something to exchange in return.

[The last comment is barely audible and not meant to be included, as it’s spoken absentmindedly before Kyrian hits the end button.]

Getting my hands on some black paint would probably be a good idea too…

Prose Log Sample:

The Fates were on his side for once. It was a scary thought really. He’d likely pay for his luck later, but for the moment that was much preferable than being dead. Which is what he would have been had whoever loaded him onto the train not done so at night and put him in what essentially amounted to the luggage section of the compartment where there were no windows and the sun didn’t reach.

The “who” was also a cause for concern, though Kyrian wasn’t unduly worried. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t defeat. Of course someone had already managed to get the better of him given where he was. That wasn’t a reassuring thought. Kyrian settled his hand on the hilt of his sword.

He could sense that the sun was only a few minutes from setting. That was good because he could also feel the train slowing down. There was only one door out of his car, which meant whatever had dragged him here would likely be waiting right outside his door. Leaving would make him a target immediately, but there was no way he would remain in the train. Being confined wasn’t a pleasant feeling. When the train finally came to a stop Kyrian rushed the door, grabbed the upper frame, and flipped himself up onto the roof. The move wouldn’t have given anyone time to target him.

No sooner had he landed on the roof, however, than the train began to move. He dove off the train, landing in a roll and coming up in a crouch. His sword was held at the ready, but he didn’t sense anyone around. He didn’t see any familiar landmarks either. Slowly he got to his feet for a closer inspection of his surroundings.

“Damn.”

He had no idea where he was, but at least there was time to find out. And find cover. He pulled his phone out to call his smart ass Squire. As much as he enjoyed tormenting Nick with middle of the night calls and sending him all over creation on pick up duty, Kyrian didn’t particularly enjoy needing the kid to save his ass. That turned out not to be an issue because there was no cell service. Kyrian let out a stream of curses in Ancient Greek. It was starting to look like the karma from being in the Fates’ favor earlier was coming fast. At this rate he could be merely a smudge of ash on the forest floor come morning.

If he had to spend the day in a cave… Someone would pay for this.
